As the kids had some time in front of the TV, Marcy stayed with Nathan and Mac in the kitchen. She checked her watch. âI told Carl Iâd be home before his shift started at eleven. Do you want to come with me, Trish? Stay at our house?â
âNo, I donât wanna see Carl. And thatâs the first place Rick will look for me.â
âWill he do that?â
âIâm not sure. But he isnât going to leave me alone forever.â
âIf you press charges, get a restraining order, heâll have to.â This from Nathan.
âWould he? His cop buddies who show up could very well give him a slap on the hand. Abuse happens within their ranks, like Rick.â
Nathan touched her arm. âStay here this weekend.â
âThank you, but Rick will come here, too. He can guess where we went.â She cleared her throat. âHe was jealous of you last night. Thatâs what made him attack you.â
âI can protect you.â
âNo, Iâm not putting anyone else in danger.â
Marcyâs brows shot up. âYou canât go back to your house.â
And Nathanâs upset showed on his face. âLetâs leave town, then. Go away for a while.â
âI hate running. I have to figure out an alternative while I heal. Some place I can stay until I go back to work on Monday night.â
âBut where can you possibly go in town thatâs safe?â Marcy asked.
âIâwait a minute. Thereâs somewhere he canât get to me.â She picked up her phone. Typed in a number. âEleanor, hello, itâs Trish Mackenzie.â She waited. âIâm afraid I need to take you up on your offer to help me if I ever needed anythingâ¦â
When she ended the conversation, Nathan asked, âWhoâs Eleanor?â
âThe mayorâs sister, the woman I told you about.â She explained the save to Marcy. âSheâs still living at the mayoral mansion. Itâs gated and thereâs security.â
âOh, thatâs perfect.â
âYou canât tell anyone, Marce. Even Carl,â Nathan told her.
âI promise I wonât.â She squeezed Trishâs arm. âDo you want a ride there?â
âLet me take her. You have the boys and itâs best they donât know either.â
âI guess they couldnât keep her whereabouts to themselves.â She glanced at Nathan then back to Mac. âCan Nathan take you, Trish?â
âYep.â
When his family left, Nathan dropped down next to her. Though she hinted at her feelings for him, he wouldnât push anything on her now. âWhen is Eleanor expecting you?â
âIn an hour.â
âWhat will you do without any of your belongings? Your car?â
âIâll figure that out. Right now, Iâm going dressed in the clothes I wore last night.â
âYou can borrow a clean shirt to wear with your jeans.
âThanks.â
They both stood. âNathan, I should say thank you for all you did for me last night, but that sounds like a brush off. Will you come spend some time with me at the mayorâs house?â
Despite the circumstances, her invitation made his heart sing.
